Week 5 Picks

Every week I seem to miss one. Appy and Tazewell got me,and last week Twin Springs got me. Here's hoping for this week:

J.J.Kelly Indians at Grundy Golden Wave

The word is that Grundy is an improved football team,but lord knows the Wave HAD to get better after last year. Kelly will have Sproles and Bates back,and that is bad news for Grundy. Indians win it 27- 14


Appalachia Bulldogs at Gate City Blue Devils


It just doesn't get any easier for Roger's young pups on the road at Legion. Growing pains=blowout loss 55-8 GC


Clintwood Green Wave hosting Lebanon's Pioneers


For the second week in a row the Wave will be tested (which is a good thing). The Pioneers have the tools to hang in there,but this is a solid Wave club and they'll get the W at Ralph's 21-7


Coeburn Blue Knights at Thomas Walker Pioneers

The 68-0 thing? Not happpening this week fellers. Shane Bright is going to get back to doing his thing after being stymied by the Tribe's defense last week. Blue Crew takes another step toward the CD crowm,winning 34-14


Twin Springs Titans at St. Paul Deacons

Those dang Titans may very well get me again,but I have to go with SP and Phillips in the lineup at home 21-13.

Powell Valley Vikings at John I. Burton Black Raiders

Those young Vikes are growing up fast. On the road at Norton is a high-pressure situation. We will certainly see just how far Phil's boys have come. So much speed on the Raider squad,but a heckuva coach on the other. I think it will be worth the price of admission. 27-20 Raiders.

Got a couple of good games this week...

<u>Powell Valley @ JI Burton</u>
GAME OF THE WEEK - Maybe game of the year. This one has been brewing all season, actually since the teams walked off the field at Bullitt Park last year. With Gate City now in the CMD and Appy struggling to rebuild, this has become the best rivalry in the LPD. Talking to several folks in Wise County over the past few days from just about every town and school, it would seem that all eyes are going to be this game. Will the Raiders set a precedent and get four wins over the Vikings in four years? Will the Vikings stun the Raiders? On paper, it would seem that the Raiders are primed for their fourth consecutive win, but I won't be surprised to see the Vikings turn it around. Whatever the outcome, I don't think you could pay me to miss this one!

<u>Haysi @ Honaker</u>
In 2007, this was without a doubt the best game I saw all year. Last year, it came down to a blocked field goal in the final minutes. This one should be just as exciting. It doesn't get any bigger in the BDD. I think the Haysi Tigers win a close one and set their sights on playoffs.

<u>Coeburn @ Thomas Walker</u>
Following a tough 21-6 loss to the JJK Indians, the Blue Knights travel to Lee County. Last week, Thomas Walker crushed Ervinton 68-0. While the drive to Ewing will be long, the Knights should have a nice drive back to Wise County, leaving Lee County with a good Cumberland District win.

<u>Appalachia @ Gate City</u>
Riding high after a 20-7 win over CMD rival Lebanon, Gate City hosts Appalachia. I don' know if there could be a tougher on-the-road game for Appalachia this year than going to Legion Field to face the Devils. The young Dawgs are gonna need all the fan support they can get in this one. Blue Devils roll.

I'm not sure the young Vikings are ready to get a win against Burton at Norton, but I'm convinced that Coach Robbins was providing a fair assessment when he said this PVHS football team was better than last year. A whole bunch of the young guys on this Viking team are really fun to watch and they play with a lot of courage. I had predicted that the Vikings would miss the playoffs this year but a win against Norton would certainly change my mind. I think the Vikings could sneak into the playoffs with a 6-4 record and, looking at the remaining schedule, wins against TW, JJK, Pound, and Appy are possible.

Anyway, I predict JIB 28 PV 13.

I wonder when he said that. A lot of PV folks were expecting to see a rough year like this. Looks like a 6-4 or 5-5 season for PV.

Most fellow PV faithful have told me that PV will not win many games. From the sounds of it Lee should have beaten us. PV should beat Thomas Walker, might beat Wise, should beat Pound, and should definitely beat Appalachia.

Clintwood will probably beat us like a drum next week.

With it being at PV and without the whole Pinkston saga adding to emotions, I'd expect it to be a closer game.
